On February 1st of this year, thanks to the intermediation of Reidar, I received an email from Paola Scarsi, an Italian journalist, writer and motorcyclist. Paola worked as a graphic designer in the Piaggio marketing office. Her father designed the poster of the little elephant on the Vespa in 1963.
In 2023 Paola wrote “la prima vespa non si scorda mai” (you never forget the first Vespa). The book tells the adventures of the most famous Italian Vespa riders and beyond. Some protagonists of the book are Ilario Lavarra, still traveling around the world today with his ’68 Gran Turismo, guest of Per Harald during the stop in Trondheim, Riccardo Costagliola, president of the Piaggio Foundation in Pontedera, Roberto Leardi, president of the Vespa club Rome for several decades, President of the Vespa Club of Italy for many years and President of the Vespa Club World in past years. Together with them, dozens of characters who contributed to the history of the Vespa on the entire planet.
On the occasion of the World Vespa Days 2024 in Pontedera, Paola decided to write a special edition of the book: “The unforgettable Vespa”. Anders, Per Harald, Reidar and me (undeservedly) were involved thanks to three Vespa riders who, having left Milan in August 2020, passed through Trondheim on their way to Cape North. Mauro Calcinotto, one of the three Vespa riders, told Paola about the fortuitous meeting with some members of our Club, during a Sunday outing. Reidar and Per Harald provided technical assistance to the 3 Italians. The historical memory of Anders who told of the birth of the Trondheim og Omeign Scooter Klubb, but also the history of the Vespa in the entire Norwegian territory, plus the exciting stories told by Per Harald and Reidar are collected in 13 pages of the book.
I hope that Paola Scarsi will come to visit us next year at the Classic Scooter Run 25, in Trondheim.
On August 3, upon returning from the North Cape, four Sicilian Vespa riders, Angelo, Giacomo, Vito and Mimmo, stopped in Trondheim. I joined them at Scandic Nidelven and after a short tour in Trondheim and a good beer in Bakklandet, we arranged to meet the next day at 7am, just before their departure for Oslo.
When I got to the hotel, I found Anders already talking to his Sicilian friends. After the usual photos with our president, Anders gave the four Vespa fans our banner and, at the same time, received theirs. We moved on to Nidarosdomen for the symbolic photo of splendid Trondheim, then we decided to ride together for a stretch of the road. Arriving in Sluppen we said goodbye to the four Vespa riders with the promise to see each other again in Sicily as soon as possible.
